Luxor: Visit the City of the Ancient Pharaohs

Luxor is a small city with an area of approximately 417 km², located in the Luxor Governorate in central Egypt on the east bank of the Nile. This city, once known as the ancient city of Thebes, was the great capital of Upper Egypt during the New Kingdom and the glorious city of Amun.

History of Thebes

In ancient Egyptian texts, Luxor was called “Waset,” meaning “city of the scepter.” Thebes was also known as “the city of 100 gates” and sometimes as “southern Heliopolis” (‘Iunu-shemaa’) to distinguish it from Heliopolis to the north, the main place for the worship of the god Ra.

The importance of Thebes began during the 11th Dynasty when the city grew into a thriving metropolis. Mentuhotep II, who unified Egypt after the First Intermediate Period, brought stability and increased the city’s significance. Thebes played a crucial role in driving the Hyksos out of Upper Egypt and served as the political, religious, and military capital of ancient Egypt from the 18th to the 20th Dynasty.

Climate of Luxor

Luxor is one of the sunniest and driest cities in the world. Summer temperatures (June, July, August) average above 40°C. During the coldest month of the year, high temperatures remain above 22°C on average, while low temperatures remain above 5°C. With an average annual rainfall of less than 1 mm, Luxor is one of the driest places on earth.
