Roman theater
Roman theater This was discovered in 1964 and it was built in the 2nd century AD.
It was built for musical performances but later it was also used for religious gatherings in the 6th century AD.
word Kom El Dekka, in Arabic, means the hill of rubble or the hill of banks,
and it was mentioned by a famous historian, El Neweiry passed through this area at the beginning of the 20th century.
Neweiry saw the many piles of rubble and sand formed by the digging of the Mahmoudiya Canal in the late 19th century,
which connected Alexandria with the Nile River, and these stacks looked exactly like a pair of huge banks and it was he who gave the area its recent famous name.
The Roman Amphitheater of Alexandria was discovered by pure chance in the year 1960.
When workers removed a pile of dust and sand to clear the land for construction of a government building in 1960,
they found some massive iron columns, indicating that something may have been buried underneath.
Immediately afterwards, excavation work began at the Kom El Dekka site
and it was carried out by the Greco Roman Museum and the Polish Excavation Mission in Egypt sponsored by the University of Warsaw.
Shortly afterwards, the excavation revealed one of the most important discoveries in Egypt in the 20th century.
