After breakfast today, we are going on a very special excursion, departing at 8:00 a.m. During this trip, you will see some of the most beautiful sights of the eastern desert. Fascinating landscapes and the most spectacular archaeological areas await. We depart after an early breakfast and drive south along the Red Sea.
After an hour’s drive, we arrive at the National Park of
which means the Valley of the Camels, running from west to east through the mountains. This wadi became known in history because an important trade route passes through here. Along this route, we will encounter many traces of the history of this desert, such as the caravan stations and the graves of the Blemmey tribe, the ancestors of the Ababda Bedouins. During the drive through the area, we will also take a detailed look at the unique vegetation here.
After two hours of driving, we reach the area where emeralds have been mined since the times of the Ptolemies. They are long-forgotten but well-preserved settlements. First, we arrive at the Roman settlement of Umm Kabu where the gems from the mines higher up the mountain were prepared for further transport to the Nile. After a short drive, we will reach Wadi Nugrus and Wadi Sikait. Sikait is the oldest settlement and is famous for its well-preserved Roman houses. There is also a small chapel here dedicated to the goddess Isis carved into the rock. We will continue to walk through the remains of the village and then visit the emerald mines. Via Sikait, we drive to Appollonia, where we can still see the remains of a Roman fort. Here, we will have lunch under the Acacia trees.
After lunch, we take a walk through the sand dunes of Marfuah, a Roman settlement where the emeralds were processed. The hills in the background provide a beautiful panoramic view. After visiting Marfuah, we take the road back to the coast.
In the late afternoon, you will be back at your hotel.
