pharaonic Egypt Memphis
was an ancient city in Egypt that served as the capital of the Old Kingdom.
It was located on the west bank of the Nile River, south of modern-day Cairo.
Pharaonic Egypt refers to the period of ancient Egyptian history ruled by pharaohs, lasting from approximately 3100 BC to 30 BC.
During this time, Egypt developed a rich and complex culture, with impressive architectural achievements such as the pyramids, temples and other monumental structures that still stand today.
Memphis played an important role in the history of pharaonic Egypt.
The legendary king Menes founded it around 3100 BC, uniting Upper and Lower Egypt and establishing the first dynasty. Memphis became the capital of Egypt during the Old Kingdom and remained an important city throughout the rest of Pharaonic history.
It focuses on the art and history of the Coptic Christian community in Egypt, which boasts a long and rich history in the country.
The museum was founded in 1908 by Marcus Simaika Pasha, a leading Coptic intellectual and historian. The building itself is a beautiful example of Coptic architecture, with a central courtyard surrounded by galleries and rooms full of artefacts and exhibitions.
