Then, we’ll go together by car to the Monasteries of St. Antonius and St. Paul. Speaking of which, it’s worth noting that these monasteries hold a special place in Christian history. They are, in fact, the oldest monasteries in Christianity. Their origins date back to the 4th century

settled in the hidden rocks and caves at the foot of Mount Galala Al Quibliya.

The Coptic Church in Egypt considers these two monasteries as the holiest places. They are accessible via the Zafarana road and are approximately 45 km away from the city of Hurghada.

The large complex of the Antonius Monastery, boasting churches, chapels, a bakery, garden, and well, stands surrounded by high walls, evoking memories of the monastic life of Saint Anthony. However, significant changes have occurred since the 4th century when only a few hermits sought refuge in these cliffs.

The Monasteries of Saint Anthony

is a Coptic Orthodox monastery located in an oasis in the eastern desert of Egypt, in the southern part of the Suez Governorate.
Hidden deep in the Red Sea Mountains, it is located 334 km southeast of Cairo.

The followers of Saint Anthony, the first Christian monk, founded the Monastery of Saint Anthony.
The Monastery of St.

Antonius

is one of the most prominent monasteries in Egypt and has had a strong influence on the formation of several Coptic institutions, as well as promoting monastic life in general.

Several patriarchs have come from the monastery and several hundred pilgrims visit the monastery every day.
Saint Anthony is a Christian saint who was born into a wealthy family in Lower Egypt around 251 AD. At the age of eight, he became orphaned
Most of what is known about him comes from the biographical work of Athanasius of Alexandria, Vita Antonii. This biography portrays Anthony as an illiterate and holy man who gained an absolute connection with divine truth through his existence in a primordial landscape.

The moment Saint Anthony dedicated his life to God and the Church stemmed from the words he heard from Mark, urging him to relinquish all possessions and seek God
At the age of 34, Anthony gave away all his possessions and worldly possessions; he ventured into the eastern desert to seek a life of humility, solitude and spiritual reflection.

Saint Anthony took the words he heard literally and that was why he ventured into the desert to live a life of asceticism. He settled in a small cave where he lived ascetically.

Hoewel St. Antonius

was not the first monk, he attracted many followers and disciples, and is one of the founders of modern Christian monasticism.
A few years after the death of Saint Anthony, his followers settled around the place where the hermit lived.

Between 298 and 300, during the reign of Constantius Chlorus, his followers constructed the Monastery of Saint Anthony. His followers established only the most essential buildings in the original settlement, placing a strong emphasis on isolation

They lived in solitary cells around a communal center of worship where they performed the Divine Liturgy.

They took their daily meals in a simple refectory. As time passed, the focus on asceticism decreased and the followers of St.

Antonius to develop closer relationships with each other to promote safety, ease and mutual fellowship.

The life of an Antonian monk evolved so slowly from a life of solitary asceticism to a life that allowed for a communal way of life In the sixth and seventh centuries, many monks from the monasteries of Scetes fled to the Monastery of Saint Anthony to escape frequent attacks by Bedouins and Berbers.

During this time, the monastery underwent a constantly changing and occasionally mutual occupation by the Coptic monks from Scetes and the Melkite monks from the east.

In 615, John the Merciful, the Melkite patriarch, sent large sums of money to Anastasius of Persia, the head of the Monastery of St.

Antonius

At that time, he was asked to take with him some Melkite monks who were being persecuted by the Persians.

These Melkite monks then continued to oversee the monastery until the end of the 8th century.

In 790, Coptic monks from the monastery of St. Macarius the Great in the desert of Scetis disguised themselves as Bedouins in an attempt to steal the earthly remains of St. John the Short, who had lived and died in the monastery of St. Anthony in the 5th century.

The Ethiopian Synaxarium describes how they tricked the Melkite monks into accomplishing this task.
it was not possible for them for the time being to fulfill their mission, for the body of the saint was guarded by the Melkite Chalcedonians who dwelt in the sanctuary.

Then the judge from the Arabs said to the Mel: The entire day of the excursion you will be accompanied by employees of Egypt4allreizen (Dutch, Italian or English-speaking guides).
